Seagate has held the exclusive rights to creating the proprietary Xbox Series X SSDs since the console launched over two years ago, but that looks set to change with a Western Digital WD_Black Xbox Series X SSD appearing on Best Buy in the US.
The 1TB WD_Black Xbox Series X expansion card is online for $180 USD ($~269 AUD) which is a huge drop on the $430 AUD that Seagate is currently charging for its 1TB Xbox Series X expansion card.
This is still a lot more expensive than the non proprietary PS5 SSDs. For instance, you can currently get a 2TB Samsung 980 Pro for $250 from Amazon right now, so even with the cheaper WD_Black XSX alternative, it’s half the price for more storage on the PS5 side.
It’s always been unclear when Seagate’s exclusivity over creating Xbox Series X expansion cards would end (if at all), but it looks like it’s coming in the very new future.
We’ll keep you posted when there’s an official announcement out there, and hopefully Australian pricing too.
