Apple announced the iPhone 15 Pro earlier this week and whilst there were some great advancements including the move to USB-C, a new action button and that gorgeous titanium body, one of the big talking points was Apple’s continued push into the gaming space.
Apple has been moving heavily into this space for a while now, with the likes of No Man’s Sky, Resident Evil Village, The Medium and Stray all coming to Macs as well as it’s continued push into Apple Arcade, but things have absolutely gone up a notch with the announcement of the iPhone 15 Pro.
The phone will feature the new A70 Pro chip and this is the first time that Apple has given its phone chip the ‘Pro’ tagline. We know that the iPhone 15 Pro will use hardware accelerated ray-tracing which is a big deal, as well as MetalFX, it’s own DLSS variant that uses AI upscaling to get the most out of its chip without requiring too much energy.
Following this announcement the company confirmed that Resident Evil 4, Resident Evil Village, Death Stranding and most impressively, the upcoming Assassin’s Creed Mirage would all come to the iPhone 15. This marks the first time that AAA games are coming to iPhone in their full form, not some watered down mobile version.
IGN got to sit down with several key members of the development team behind iPhone 15 Pro specifically around its gaming efforts, and whilst you can read the full interview here, there’s some interesting tidbits below, including Apple making some bold statements about how it expects it to become the best gaming console.
When asked about how the iPhone 15 Pro compare sto the likes of the PS5 and Xbox Series X, Apple’s Senior Director of GPU Software, Jeremy Sandmel said: ” I think they say the best game console is the one you have with you… It’s going to be the best game console.”
Whether that statement rings true, I think just with the advancements that Apple is making in power with its own Apple Silicon chips that it using in all of its devices, and the money it is sinking into Apple Arcade, it’s going to be really interesting to see what the company does with AAA gaming and the likes of the Apple TV for instance.
The iPhone 15 Pro launches on September 22nd with pre-orders live now.
