DJI Mic 2 & Lav Review – Improvements All Round

New design and features!

When it comes to the design, the DJI Mic 2 transmitter has a new transparent black design that we saw saw in the DJI Osmo Pocket 3 that dropped late last year, but there’s now a new white design that looks absolutely stunning as well.

The charging case system has been one of the best parts of the DJI Mic system and that’s been improved. There’s now a little lock on the front of the case to keep everything secured and a new design on the actual case itself.

When it comes to the receiver, it now has a larger 1.1-inch touch screen as well as a brand new thumbwheel that allows you to quickly scroll through settings without needing to lay a finger on the touch screen.

The thing I love most about this system is that you can easily snap the case open, pull out exactly what you need as well as see battery life (which has now been improved to 18 hours) without having to muck around with settings, or worry that you’re out of charge. It’s a genius system that just works, which is exactly what I want from a piece of tech.

One of my favourite things about the DJI Mic 2 is that it has on-board recording, which has now been extended to 14 hours. This is a big one as it means you can record directly on your transmitter, then plug it in VIA USB-C to your PC to get your audio straight off..

When it comes to audio quality, the DJI Mic 2 sees some serious improvements that will improve where you can use the DJI Mic 2 without worrying that you’re going to get average audio.

The largest is probably the new AI noise cancelling which you’re able to turn on and off on the fly. I was recording in my living room with the air conditioner blasting which was evident whilst recording in normal mode, but flicking over to the AI noise cancelling mode instantly got rid of this.

Similarly, I took the DJI Mic 2 into a busy shopping centre and once I flicked over to the mode, whilst I saw a minor drop in actual quality, the background noise was almost totally eliminating, so like with any noise cancelling feature, you’ll need to pick and choose when to use it.

Another great new feature is direct Bluetooth connectivity to the microphones themselves. This allows you to directly pair the actual transmitters to a device such as your phone, and record directly whilst you film video without needing to connect your receiver or any wire at all.

It’s worth mentioning though that this limited to certain apps depending on which phone you’re using. Testing with my Google Pixel worked using the default camera app, but on Apple, this wasn’t the case, although it did work whilst using third-party apps such as Protake or Filmic Pro.

There’s also another feature with the DJI Mic 2 will cleverly record a track with slightly less gain what you set just in case you are coming in too hot and need a version that has a little bit less volume. Hopefully it’s something you never need, but you’ll always be thankful to have a track that can be made louder rather than one that is too loud and unsalvageable.

You’re still able to connect the receiver with the included magnetic USB-C or Lightning attachment, but in most cases, it’s so much easier just to take your transmitter out with you without having to lug around anything else or fumble around connecting bits and pieces.

One of my favourite features of the DJI Mic that is still present in the Mic 2 is how they clip onto you, with either a clip mechanism or a very clever little magnetic that allows you to attach them to your clothing, but for those that maybe don’t want anything bulky showing on the outside, DJI has introduced something in its mic product line to solve this.

DJI users have been long-requesting a lav and DJI hasn’t disappointed with the new DJI Lavalier Mic, which allows you to have a bit more of a discrete recording option when connected to your transmitter. It has a clever little design where you can spin it exactly where you need so that it’s pointing in the right direction, and it’s a no-brainer purchase in my opinion.

Overall, the DJI Mic 2 is a great improvement over the original, and it’s very clear that DJI has taken the feedback on board and improved everything from the design to the audio quality to features such as Bluetooth connectivity.

The DJI Mic 2 is out now and will set you back $379 AUD for 1 x transmitter and receiver or $529 AUD for the pack that includes 2 transmitters, a receiver and a charging case. Extra transmitters can be purchased for $169 AUD (in white or black), the lav can be purchased for $69 AUD and the charging case for $119 AUD.
