DJI absolutely revolutionised the video creation space a few years ago with the Osmo Pocket 3 and it’s followed it up superbly with the Osmo Mobile 7P which does a lot of things that I’ve never seen in a phone gimbal.
For the most part, the Mobile 7P does as good as a job of all of the other competitors on the market as tracking with its new ActiveTrack 7.0 technology that is DJI’s most advanced tracking technology yet, allowing for a really smooth following of a subject whether it be people, animals or more. You really can’t go wrong if you’re wanting to use the DJI Mimo software.
If you’re wanting to use your standard camera app or any third-party apps, the Osmo Pocket 7P offers a bunch of features thanks to the new Multifunctional Module.
This is a little unit that connects to the Pocket 7P with a little connector. It has its own camera to be able to track subjects directly in the standard camera app and you can use gestures such as showing your palm to start tracking, making a V to take a photo or start a video recording or framing your face to adjust subject framing.
I’ve always been a big fan of just using the standard camera app (even though DJI Mimo is fantastic) so this goes a long way to doing that. It also has a built-in light that can be controlled both with temperature and brightness and with the way that the module connects, it can face the front or back of your phone.
This module also allows you to connect the new DJI Mic Mini directly to the gimbal as well, meaning that you get the high quality microphone quality through your phone as opposed to the bluetooth connection that can be a bit subpar.
You can also charge your phone through the Multifunctional Module and then charge the gimbal at the same time. It has a larger 10 hour battery life (50% improvement on the 6) and really allows you to keep your phone charged for a lot longer for live streams or longer shoots.
There’s also a side wheel that allows you to adjust zoom and focal length smoothly if using the DJI Mimo app or adjust the fill light on the Multifunctional Module if you’re just using the standard camera app.
The Pocket 7P has a quick unfolding design that allows you to fold down into a compact package. It has a built-in tripod that pulls out of the bottom of it and it also has a selfie rod built-in for when you want a bit more length to fit more into the frame, so whether you’re shooting and want stabilisation, want to set up the camera and have it track you, or just use it to take family photos at $219 it’s a great pickup for anyone looking to create content for personal reasons or for content creation reasons.
All-in-all, this is absolutely another win for DJI and it’s been such a joy to watch their product line-up really expand over the last 12 months. The DJI Osmo Mobile is out now for $219.95 AUD and there’s also a standard Mobile 7 (without the multifunctional module) for $159 AUD.
