Google took to the MadeByGoogle 24 stage this morning to reveal four new phones in the Google Pixel 9 range including the Google Pixel 9, 9 Pro, 9 Pro XL and 9 Pro Fold. This marks the first time that a Pro device comes in the smaller size and it’s also the first Google foldable to come to Australia.
It’s worth mentioning right off the bat that because Google is releasing devices so much earlier this year, they’re releasing in stages with the 9/9 Pro XL dropping first next week, Watch 3 and Fold dropping in early September, and the 9 Pro and Buds Pro 2 coming later this year.
All devices in the range come with a Google Tensor G4 chipset with Gemini built in as well as AI features such as Pixel screenshots to help you recall things you’ve taken easily, a new Add Me feature which can add people left off photos after the fact, a new Video Boost feature to enhance videos taken and an auto frame feature in Magic Editor.
The Google Pixel 9 comes with a new glass finish and matte frame which is much more squared off than previous years. It has a new camera bump that is more pronounced but more of a design feature than previously.
The display is 35% brighter with slightly thinner bezels and the display comes in at 6.3-inches which is slightly larger than the 8. As far as cameras go it has a 50mp wide lens, 48mp ultra wide lens and laser detect auto focus with a 10.5mp front camera.
The ram has been boosted to 12GB (4GB bump) and battery life is said to last 20% longer as well.
The Google Pixel 9 will be available on August 22nd and will come in Obsidian, Porcelain, Wintergreen and Peony.
For the first time Google is releasing the 9 Pro in a smaller 6.3-inch formfactor called 9 Pro and the 9 Pro XL which is 6.8-inches and the standard larger size that the Pro normally comes in. All features including the display and cameras are identical in both devices with the only difference being the size.
It has a new design with squared off polished edges, a soft matte back and the same sculpted camera bar found in the Pixel 9. It’s also said to be twice as durable as the 8 Pro. Performance has been increased through the Tensor G4 Chip and a 4GB increase in ram to 16GB.
The display is brighter with up to 2,000 nits of HDR and 3,000 nits of peak brightness and the bezels are thinner and more uniform. As far as cameras go, it has a 42MP front camera with 30% better light sensitivity, a 50MP wide camera, 48mp telephoto lens, 48mp ultrawide lens and that same temperature sensor.
The Google Pixel 9 Pro will release later this year and will come in Obsidian, Porcelain, Hazel and Rose Quartz.

Google’s second foldable makes its way to Australia and it’s part of the 9 Pro range. It has a larger 8-inch display on the inside and a 6.3-inch outer display with that same metal frame and polished hinge as the 9 Pro.
As far as cameras go, unfortunately it doesn’t quite get to the levels of the 9 Pro with a 48mp wide lens, 10.5mp ultra wide lens and a 10.8mp telephoto lens with a 10mp lens on the front. Google showed off a clever ‘Made You Look’ feature which basically plays some cute animations on the front screen whilst you take photos of your children.
The Google Pixel 9 Pro Fold will release on September 2nd in Porcelain and Obsidian at the below prices:
