LEGO made their biggest announcement since the Minifigure in the way of the new LEGO SMART Brick and SMART Play during this week’s CES 2026. Designed with inspiration and imagination in mind, the LEGO SMART Play platform, which encompasses the LEGO SMART Brick, LEGO SMART Tags and LEGO SMART Minifigurines, react to interactive play in real time – bringing a whole new realm of exploration and fun for kids (and adults).
The new platform features more than twenty patented world-firsts for the technology, with the LEGO SMART Brick being powered by a custom-made chip and measuring smaller than a standard LEGO stud. The technology includes sensors, accelerometers, light sensing and a sound sensor, as well as a miniature speaker driven by an onboard synthesiser. It also wirelessly charges! In a nutshell, all this technology combines together for one imaginative play session. Pairing the SMART Tags, Minifigurines and Brick together will allow builders’ creations to become interactive – responding to actions and movements with appropriate sounds, lights and behaviours. And better yet, all elements of LEGO SMART Play are compatible with the existing LEGO System-in-Play.
The highlight of the presentation was of course actually seeing this new SMART Play in action, and what better franchise to show off this new technology than LEGO Star Wars. It makes sense that Star Wars will be the first collection of LEGO sets to house the new SMART Play system, already primed with epic storytelling, unforgettable characters and endless brick-build adventures!
Come March 1st 2026 (in selected markets), builders will be able to get their hands on the LEGO Star Wars SMART Play: Luke’s Red Five X-Wing ($149.99 AUD), LEGO Star Wars SMART Play: Darth Vader’s TIE Fighter ($99.99AUD), and LEGO Star Wars SMART Play: Throne Room Duel & A-Wing ($249.99AUD) sets. Each of these sets utilise and harnesses the power of LEGO SMART Play in their own unique ways, from imitating the sounds and movement of a X-Wing flying throwing the skies, the iconic sounds and lights of lasers firing, and the sweet hums of Darth Vader’s and Luke Skywalkers’ lightsabers.
Needless to say, whether you’re a Star Wars fan, LEGO addict or just all-around tech lover, this new LEGO SMART Play system will definitely be the highlight and frontrunner for LEGO’s 2026 – and should present some great new ways to play, build and interactive with LEGO as a whole as well as the LEGO franchises fans continue to love.
The LEGO SMART Play™ All-in-One sets from LEGO Star Wars will be available for pre-order from January 9th and available to purchase from the 1st March from www.LEGO.com, LEGO Stores and select retailers in launch markets.
