I’ve been a big fan of UltraWide monitors both for gaming and productivity, so I was super excited to go hands-on with the 34-inch LG UltraGear Ultrawide gaming monitor, putting it through its paces with a range of games, but also for video editing and multitasking.
LG’s latest line of UltraGear monitors have a fantastic minimalist design that goes against the grain. This has a super simple stand that is a nice aluminium and clicks together super easily. There’s minimal RGB which is what I personally prefer. There’s a huge amount of adjustment with full swivel, full tilt and also a decent amount of height adjustment too.
As far as the actual display goes, it has a borderless design which really makes the image on the OLED display pop. This is a 34-inch 21:9 WQHD monitor with an 800R curve which naturally matches your eye curvature. I find this to be the perfect curve to really immerse you and give you a full view of what’s on the ultrawide screen without it taking up too much desk space.
The display itself has an anti-glare coating, which does a fairly good job. I was using the monitor in our fairly bright studio, and whilst you obviously get a reflection here and there based on the angle, it did a fairly decent job.
The monitor is rated for HDR400 with a peak brightness of 1300 nits thanks to its MLA+ technology, so whilst it’s not QD-OLED tech, it still has a good amount of pop when it comes to vividness. Obviously with it being OLED, you can expect perfect blacks which also really helps those colours pop and allows for a great amount of contrast between the dark and bright portions of a scene.
Playing games on an ultrawide (and this one in particular) really is a stunning experience. Playing through Horizon Forbidden West really made the colours pop and the whole world look even more luscious, and for the likes of Cyberpunk 2077, it made the neon goodness even better with those neon lights reflecting from darker scenes.
As far as connectivity goes, you’ve got 2 x HDMI 2.1 ports, 1 x DisplayPort, headphone out and 2 USB ports. It’s a fairly good mix of ports, but at this price point I’d really love USB-C as when I’m not gaming on my PC, I’ve often using a Mac so love to have the ability to use one cord to get power/video over USB-C.
In addiction to the panel being a buttery 240hz, there’s a bunch of gaming features including dyanmic action sync, a black stabiliser, crosshair and an in-built FPS counter. The OSD is controlled with a little knob at the back of the monitor, and it’s a super simple, yet effective menu that allows you to easily change what you need without overthinking it.
