I’m not the most active person in the world, but I love being aware of how much sleep I get, how many steps I’m getting in, and for the work-outs that I do, ensure that they’re all being tracked. Whilst I love my Apple Watch, I do still feel it’s a struggle to use it as a 24/7 tracking device just given how quickly it dies.
I wasn’t much of a jewelry wearer, but since getting married, that’s changed, and that’s why the prospect of a smart ring was super exciting to me, and once I learnt that the Ultrahuman Ring AIR had hit Australia, I was incredibly eager to give it a go.
Obviously given everyone finger size is different, and you can choose to use the ring on any finger, and also the fact that it needs to be snug in order to track, you need to start with a sizing kit that is free to get. There’s 10 different sizes and these are little plastic replicas of the ring that you should wear for a full 24 hours to see how it fits.
Once you’ve got your size, there’s six colours including Raw Titanium, Aster Black, Matte Grey, Bionic Gold, Space Silver and the new Brushed Rose Gold, and whilst these rings are quite bulky, they’re all very stylish. I rock a brushed gold wedding band on my left hand, so I decided to go with a black on my right hand, and I really love how it looks.
Setting up the UltraHuman Ring Air once it’s on your hand is incredibly easy, with the fantastic app that is one of the best health tracking experiences that I’ve used. I love how seamless it is in syncing the data from your ring, and also the fact that you only have to really think about it once a week given the charge so it seamlessly blends into your life.

The app not only presents the data in an easy to read way, breaking down things like how much sleep you got, how long you spent in each area and presenting them with an overall sleep score, but it’ll also tell you in very simple green, yellow and red indicates if your heart rate dropped, or maybe your temperature rose, and it’s great at presenting these facts without making you feel like it’s the end of the world.
Something I was really impressed about is how it’d even automatically capture little 20-30 minute naps that I had on the couch, or when I’d be up on a Sunday morning and maybe get in an extra 30 minutes. It was clearly very accurate across the board.
Similarly, it’s great at telling you when you should sleep in order to make up for what’s lost and presenting in a way that’s simple to understand a long with reasons (again not scary ones) about why things might have happened they way that they did.
It will also recommend when you should start taking caffeine, or maybe start settling down and this also pairs with live activities on iPhone as well – you might start to ignore these after a while, but it’s a great functional use of this data beyond just presenting the facts.
Another great use of the ring, and the fact that you’ll have it on a lot longer than your smart watch is the fact that it’s always tracking things like heart rate and skin temperature, and it uses this data to tell you how stressed you might be throughout the day, which I was surprised in its accuracy as someone who is often quite anxious throughout the day.
When it comes to work-outs, you can start them through the app and it can also automatically detect an activity, which you can track in the app as well, and it’s obviously monitoring steps as you go through your day too.
I think the one thing that would like to see improve is battery life, and UltraHuman has made progress on this recently introducing a Chill Mode that cleverly chooses when to track heart rate and temperature (like when you sleep or are resting), which is supposed to boost battery life by 35%.
The battery life is rated at 4-6 days, but I often find I’m having to charge around the three day mark, so ideally I’d like to see that extended. Unlike other ring chargers, there’s no charge in the charging brick either, so you need to plug it into a USB-C cord every single time to charge it, for 2-3 hours. I also would love for the charger to have QI charging capability as well.
All-in-all, if you’re wanting a stylish way to track health metrics, the UltraHuman Ring AIR is a great way to do that, and even in the few months that I’ve had the ring, it’s very clear that UltraHuman is making lots of advancements in this space.
