Whilst digital driver licenses have been a thing in other states for some time, the Victorian government has announced that they will finally be rolling out to Victorians after a successful trial in Ballarat.
MP Jacinta Allan announced the news on Twitter: “From next month, Victorians can carry a digital drivers licence on their phone. You just need to download either the VicRoads or Services Victoria app to automatically receive a digital licence once it has been processed in May”

According to the information, they will roll out in May and you’ll need to download the VicRoads app to get access.
“Following a successful trial in Ballarat, digital driver licences will soon be available in the myVicRoads app to all Victorian full licence holders. Get ready now to start using your Digital Driver Licence as soon as it’s available.” says the Vic Roads website.
Further information on the website has the below details about preparing:
- Download the myVicRoads app via Google Play or through the App store and log in with your myVicRoads account.
- Reset your password from the login screen if you need (click ‘forgotten password’)
- Follow the prompts to activate two-step verification (if this isn’t already enabled).
Naturally, there was a bit of scepticism online with people fearing that their IDs would be hacked and details used for harm, but we’ll wait to see what happens in this.
It’s mentioned that those that are on learner and p-plates will need to wait until later in the year. Hopefully it won’t be long before we can use our phones to pay for public transport and fully ditch any types of cards.
