After iOS 17 dropped a few weeks ago, Apple has today dropped the latest MacOS update titled Sonoma for Apple Macs.
There’s a host of features which we’ll get into a bit later in the article, but one that catches me eye is Game Mode which really highlights Apple’s continued effort into the AAA gaming space.
HOW DOES GAME MODE ON MAC WORK?
Firstly, you need a Mac with Apple Silicon. You then need to use the green full-screen button in the top left when playing a game, and a game mode menu will then appear in your menu bar.
As described by Apple: “Game Mode optimizes your gaming experience by giving your game the highest priority access to your CPU and GPU, lowering usage for background tasks. And it doubles the Bluetooth sampling rate, which reduces input latency and audio latency for wireless accessories like game controllers and AirPods.”
The mode will automatically turn off when you get otu of the game, or stop viewing it in full-screen.
You can also setup a focus mode so that no notifications pull through as soon as you connect a wireless controller such as a DualSense controller or Xbox controller.
OTHER MACOS SONOMA FEATURES
Many of the MacOS Sonoma features are in-line with what we’ve seen in iPhone and iPad including widgets which are now on Mac and can be placed on your desktop, and you can also add them from iPhone easily.
There’s now a new video conferencing feature where you can overlay yourself over what you’re presenting, there’s updates to messages such as stickers and improvements to PDF editing as well.
