Dbrand has been known for pushing the boundary in recent times, most recently taking on Sony with its faceplates, in which it had to re-release said faceplates with certain cutouts and differences to avoid lawyers.
The company has taken it one step further this time though, releasing an almost one-for-one Tears of the Kingdom Nintendo Switch skin (with different symbols obviously) at a fraction of the cost. The new skins can be purchased here for $49.99 USD (~$75 AUD) for a limited time only. The skin package also includes a black variant of the Joy-Con for those that don’t want that green look.
In typical Dbrand fashion, they’ve really not been shy about the situation, with the listing reading:
“The power of plagiarism: Contrary to popular belief, you need to spend money to save money. Specifically, by giving it to us. You see, when one of the world’s most litigious companies announces a $359.99 price tag to replace your Switch with a limited edition variant, only dbrand is up to the challenge of charging you slightly less for a “creative reinterpretation” of their overpriced novelty console. If a dollar saved is a dollar earned, Clone of the Kingdom is the easiest $310.04 you’ve ever made”
The skins also have some pretty interesting words on them apparently, with Dbrand almost antagonising Nintendo’s lawyers. It’s fun to see, but it’ll be interesting to see how this one goes down.
