UPDATE: Passkey for PlayStation has now been released across the world, and you can find out more about it in the video below:
ORIGINAL STORY: PlayStation has today announced that PlayStation Passkey has rolled out in Australia and New Zealand ahead of presumably rolling out to the rest of the world.
Passkeys are a new form of security that use a secondary device to login to your account rather than a password. It works by using a device to basically act as a login mechanic for your account, in this instance the PlayStation Network.
This is more secure as it makes phishing or hacking harder, given it’s using the device to authenticate, and it’s subsequent biometrics (finger print, key code or face) rather than a password that could appear in data breaches.
It’s also hopeful as you don’t need to remember a password, instead just using your device to login.
Currently, you can use Passkeys on the web as well as on PS5 and PS4 consoles. If you’re still using a PS3 or a PlayStation Vita, you’ll need to stick with the old password method.
Currently, you can use Apple or Google devices, or a password manager such as 1password to store your virtual passkeys.
There’s a load of more information over at the PlayStation website, and you can activate your PlayStation Passkey HERE.
