The Samsung Galaxy Z Flip has been my favourite phone design over the last few years, consistently defying the odds of what we thought was possible design-wise, which was especially the case last year with that cover screen getting even bigger, but the improvements go a long way this year too with the Z Flip 6.
The design feels a lot more streamlined with the edges being a lot squarer which gives the device a much nicer finish when closed, the edges and camera rings now feature the same colour of the device which gives It a point of difference and the big improvement is a smaller no-gap hinge.
This results in much less of a crease on the main display and whilst it’s still there if you really look, it’s a lot less prominent and you do have to really look at it. This is something that is normally really picked at by haters of foldables, but it’s nearly non-existent now.
Another big improvement is an increase in battery size to 4,000 mAh up from 3,700 mAh without an increase in size or weight. There’s also vapor chamber cooling as well which should result in a pretty decent cooling increase.
If there was one thing that could be criticised about last year’s Flip, it was that it was lacking in the camera department to other devices such as the Z Fold or Galaxy Ultra. Last year’s device only included a 12 megapixel main sensor whilst this has now been upgraded to 50 megapixels which is a huge improvement.

and this was a real bummer in previous iterations due to the fact that there’s no better phone design on the market that is better for taking photos and videos in my opinion.
The main reason why taking photo and videos on a Flip is so much better is because you can utilise that gorgeous 3.4-inch screen to see yourself for selfie photos whilst using the outside cameras rather than the much inferior selfie camera.
There’s a bunch of smart gestures that can now be used as well, and an auto zooming feature that allows you to set the phone down and watch the hard work be done for you without having to keep running back and forth.
Other ways you can utilise the design of the flip is by using the phone to prop itself up, either sitting flat with the device folded 90 degrees or in a teepee like formation to once agin take advantage of that outside camera.
Another way that I love to use the Flip is by holding it like a camcorder which not only feels super nostalgic, but it actually a super natural way to record your subjects whilst filming in landscape without losing grip of the phone.
AI is the word when it comes to any smart phone launch at this point, and it’s no different here with many of the recently introduced AI Android features present in the Z Flip 6 such as Circle to Search, Live Translate and more. These are great if you need them, but probably not going to be the deciding factor over the great formfactor of the Z Flip 6.
I’m still excited by this form factor more than any other, and I’m really excited to see how Samsung keeps innovating with it for years to come.
