XGIMI Horizon Ultra Projector Review – 4K Dolby Vision Goodness

The best projector I've used

Last year I checked out the XGIMI MoGo 2 Pro and was really impressed with the visual quality paired with the smarts to get a near perfect picture on any surface at any angle, but really, this was just the entree to the XGIMI Horizon Ultra, which is far and away the best projector that I’ve ever used.

The thing that I noticed pulling the projector out of the box is just how nice the design is. It’s got a lovely creamy, gold colour, with a fabric front panel that lowers when powered to reveal the projector lens.

It’s a great piece of premium technology that allows the projector to blend into your home decor when not in use. It’s the nicest projector that I can remember seeing, and it’s quite petite in size for the features that it offers too.

As far as inputs go, there’s two HDMI 2.1 ports (one that supports EARC, 2x USB ports, an ethernet port, a 3.5mm headphone jack as well as an optical port. For connectivity you’ve got Wi-Fi 6 and also Bluetooth connectivity.

The Horizon Ultra has dual light technology which combines a laser light source with an LED light source. The two combined allows for ultra-high brightness, a super wide colour gamut as well as accuracy for a great picture. It can output at 4K at up to 200-inches.

At 2,300 ISO Lumens, I was absolutely blown away with the image quality of the XGIMI Horizon Ultra. You only have to watch the video below which blew over 50 million people away with how good the picture quality and brightness is.

The colour is extremely vivid and even when watching during the day, there was enough brightness to have an image quality that didn’t have you rushing back to a TV.

The big selling point of the Horizon Ultra is that it’s the world’s first 4K long-throw home projector with Dolby Vision, which you’re able to take advantage of when watching movies or TV shows that have been graded in Dolby Vision, and if you’re somebody that has used Dolby Vision on your TV, you’ll know that it’s hard to go back, and it’s a fairly impressive feat that XGIMI has been able to advance its tech to include it here.

If you’re a big gamer, there’s a game mode that means you can game with even lower latency, so you’re all set. Again, it was a very similar experience to watching movies with the picture being all that more immersive thanks to the larger display provided by the projector with fantastic, vibrant colours and immense brightness.

Picture quality is one thing, but the ease of use of a projector is equally important and XGIMI has absolutely delivered with its intelligent screen adaption 3.0 technology. There’s a number of things at play here that enhance the entire experience.

THE CHEAPEST PRICE: $3,495 FROM JB HI-FI

The biggest and best feature with ISA 3.0 is the auto keystone tech which will allow you to get a near perfect image at any angle, with only minor manual adjustments needed. This allows you to even put the projector on an angle, and it’ll do a fantastic job of straightening out the image.

Similarly, auto focus will always ensure that your image quality is as crisp as possible and there’s optical zoom to get the perfect picture size without losing quality.

The Ultra can also dynamically shift brightness and colours based on what time of the day it is to maximise brightness during the day and colour accuracy at night, and can even measure the surface that you’re projecting onto to adapt colour accuracy.

The projector also cleverly recognises when something moves in front of the projector and will stop the image, which is great to save your eyes from any unwanted projection, as at this bright of an image, that could cause some serious issues.

The speakers absolutely blew me away with the Horizon Ultra. It has 2 x 12W Harman Kardon Dolby Audio compatible speakers that sit at the front and initially I thought I’d pair some speakers with the projector but it’s absolutely not necessary with a huge amount of loudness, great bass and clarity for audio whether you’re listening to music, playing games or watching movie, it’ll absolutely be more than sufficient.

The XGIMI Horizon Ultra runs Android OS 11 which means that you have pretty much every app that you could want including all the big streaming apps as well as local streaming apps such as 10Play and 9now.

Like with most other XGIMI projectors, you can’t install Netflix from the Google Play store, although there is an easy way to get it side loaded with instructions included in the box but at this price point, you’d obviously love for it to be native along with all the other apps.

Similarly, because it’s running Google OS, you can cast directly from your device and even use Google Assistant to navigate your way around the OS, so it feels like a super premium experience that is never slow or unresponsive.

CONCLUSION
The XGIMI Horizon Ultra pairs incredible visuals with fantastic smarts to cement itself as one of the best home projectors. The insane brightness, super vivid and accurate colours and Dolby Vision as well as the super sleek OS and smart adjustment technology will blow any home entertainment enthusiast away.
